CA/PA Analysis Module - Drilling Analysis Data
By Drilling into results, you can break down information and reveal where hidden problems and trends may lie. Drilling may be performed on a selected row, column or cell on the grid, or a graph element, e.g. a bar. Drilling can have two basic results depending on whether you drill into data or drill by another data field.
Tell me more about how Drilling works
When drilling you perform two basic steps:
-
First select a value on which to base the drill. When a single dimension is used, this is always the row total value. This selection will become the filter applied by the drill
-
Then choose the data field by which to drill, you may choose the same data field as is currently displayed, which is referred to as 'drilling in', or a different one to change perspective on the data
Consider the following table representing results in an Analysis grid. Departments make up the rows. The Support row with the total value 22 is selected:
After selecting the drill button from the toolbar a choice of value on which to drill is given:
-
Note that the same data value 'Department' will appear at the top of the list. Selecting this value will:
-
Apply the filter "Where Department = Support"
-
Change the Data Field displayed so that the next hierarchical level of that Department is displayed
-
This is called 'Drilling In', and it has revealed that most problems have been encountered in the European support department.
Now after selecting the Europe row, another drill is performed. This time 'Source' is selected instead of departments. This will:
-
Apply the filter "Where Department = Europe"
-
Change the Data Field displayed so that applicable source values are shown instead of departments
This is called 'Drilling By', and it has revealed that most problems have been encountered in the European support department and are the results of Customer Complaints.
Where two dimensions are displayed in the grid, the option to Analyse by the Row Total, Column Total or Cell value is made available.
Consider the following table representing results in an Analysis grid. Source values make up the columns and Department the rows. The Customer/Support Cell with the Value 15 is selected:
After selecting the drill button from the toolbar a choice of value to drill on is given:
-
Source – and then a list of Data Fields, selecting Source and then a Data Field value will result in:
-
The filter "Where Source = Customer" being applied, i.e. the Customer Column will be drilled
-
The Column dimension will change to display the selected Data Field value
-
-
Department – and then a list of Data Fields, selecting Department and then a Data Field value will result in:
-
The filter "Where Department = Support" being applied, i.e. the Support Column will be drilled
-
The Row dimension will change to display the selected Data Field value
-
-
Value By – and then a list of Data Fields, selecting Value By and then a Data Field value will result in:
-
The filter "Where Department = Support AND Where Source = Customer" being applied, i.e. the Cell containing the value '15' will be drilled
-
The Row dimension will change to display the selected Data Field value
-
Tell me how to drill into data
To drill any data field:
-
Select the row or cell value that will be drilled (the analysis will focus on this data by filtering on it)
-
Either choose [ACTIONS], then [DRILL BY] from the drop-down menu, or click the 'Drill By' toolbar button:
-
In the list of fields presented, choose a data field
Where data fields are hierarchical and the same data field is selected for drilling, the next level in the hierarchy is presented. Where the lowest level in the hierarchy is reached, the system will display the message 'There is no data to display'.
Alternatively, to quickly drill into a field using the same data value (expanding the hierarchy to the next level):
Double-click on the row or graph section, e.g. a bar.
A drill may result in no data to display, which may be because there is no further breakdown available. Click the back icon to return to the previous state.
Navigating back and forward through drill results
To navigate through the Drill:
-
From the main menu of the Analysis screen, select [VIEW], then either [BACK] or [FORWARD] or;
-
Click the Back
or Forward
icons from the Analysis Details screen
Why can't I Access Analysis?
The ability to access the Analysis Module is controlled by security privileges as follows:
To access the Analysis Module, you must either have, or belong to a Security group that has the securable command:
-
AccessAnalysisModule.
If you can’t access the Analysis Module, you may not have the required security privileges to do so. Security privileges are assigned in the Administration Console; for more information, contact your Ideagen Quality Management Administrator.
